Word Search

The grid above is a free word search. A short list of words is hidden in straight lines, and you drag through the letters to mark each one. There is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for. Open the page and the puzzle is already running.

This one lives on Daily Puzzle, next to Wordle, Connections, and Octordle. Those games ask you to guess. A word search does the opposite: the letters are already printed, and your job is to see the word sitting inside them.

What a word search is

A word search puzzle is a square of letters plus a list. Each word on the list runs in a straight line: left to right, right to left, up, down, or on a diagonal. You do not invent letters and you do not get a clue sentence. You scan until the spelling shows up, then you trace it.

Paper versions have been around for decades, usually beside a crossword in a newspaper or a classroom packet. A word search online should keep that same rule and drop the parts that make paper annoying on a phone: tiny type, a list shoved into a sidebar, and a finger covering the cell you are trying to read. Here the list sits under the grid as plain chips. When you find a word, the chip is crossed out and the trail stays marked, so you do not hunt the same line twice.

People also call this a word find or a word hunt. The names all point at the same five quiet minutes. It ends when the list is empty. There is no guess limit and no clock.

How to play

Look at the theme chip above the grid first. If it says Kitchen, you are looking for bowls and bread, not cities. Then glance at the chips once so you know the longest words. A long word such as ANCHOR or THUNDER has a shape you can spot. Short words hide inside other words, so leave them until the long ones are marked.

Press the first letter and drag in one direction only. Across, down, or diagonal all count. If you bend the line, it does not count, because a classic word search never turns a corner. Let go on the last letter. A match crosses the chip off. A miss just clears, with no penalty.

On the daily board, words can also run backwards. If the chip says STAR, the grid may spell RATS in those same cells. Easy mode, in Unlimited, only uses four forward directions, which is a kinder place to learn the drag. Medium is a 10 by 10 grid and it is what everyone gets for the daily puzzle. Hard is 12 by 12, better on a desk or with the phone turned sideways.

Hint lights the first letter of one remaining word and then stops. It does not draw the rest of the trail. Use it after you have already walked the rows and the columns. The ring next to the theme shows how many words are left.

Daily puzzle and extra rounds

Daily mode is one shared board. The date picks the theme and the placement, so the puzzle you see in the morning is the same one everyone else has. Leave halfway through and come back: the words you already found are saved in this browser. Nothing is sent to an account, because there is no account.

Unlimited builds a new themed grid when you want another round. That is also where Easy, Medium, and Hard live. Switching back to Daily does not wipe the daily save. When the list is finished you can copy a short result line and send it to a friend.

Themes stay ordinary on purpose: ocean, kitchen, garden, cities, music, weather, sports, animals, colors, science, bakery, forest, cinema, school, travel, space. You are practicing the hunt, not decoding a trivia pack.

A way of looking that finds words faster

Do not wander. Take the longest chip and scan each row for its first two letters. Then scan each column. Then the diagonals that fall down to the right, then the ones that fall down to the left. A tidy sweep beats jumping at whatever letter your eye lands on. The word you cannot see is often sitting quietly on the bottom row.

When only two or three chips are left, stop picturing the whole word and look for its rarest letter. Q, X, Z, J, and K show up once or twice on a board. If QUIZ is left, find Q and the rest of the word is almost decided. Pairs such as CH, TH, SH, and QU work the same way. For ANCHOR, hunt CH. For THUNDER, hunt TH.

After a find, look beside the marked trail. Short words like BEE or OAK often sit against a line that is already colored, because that is the gap the grid had left. If one word refuses to appear, park it and hunt a different chip. Finding the second word often uncovers the first, since the letters overlap.

Extra letter strings show up in any filled grid. Selecting a word that is not on the list does nothing. That is normal. Only the chips score.

Playing on a phone

The board uses the width of the screen. The word list wraps underneath, where a thumb can reach it. While you are dragging, the page does not scroll, so the line stays on the letters you meant. On a computer, click and drag the same way. If a hard 12 by 12 grid feels tight, turn the phone sideways. The cells grow with the screen.

Found words are crossed out in the list as well as marked on the grid, so color is not the only signal. The status line under the board also says what you just found, which is what a screen reader hears.

Play this when you want a list you can finish. Play Wordle when you want to deduce a hidden word. Play Connections when you want to sort groups. Play Octordle when you want eight boards at once.
